Groundcovers

The Garden's Carpet

Looking to replace your lawn? Tired of buying and spreading mulch all the time? You need groundcovers, and you'll find no better source than Bountiful Gardens.

Look out at your yard--is the majority of your surface area covered in turfgrass? Your landscape could be so much more diverse and interesting! Lawns have their purpose, but there's no need for them to consume our properties. In fact, lawns have a negative impact on ecosystem health. In addition to creating "pollen deserts" for bees, butterflies and more, they also consume excessive amounts of water and create harmful fertilizer-laced runoff that damages our waterways. Replacing portions of turfgrass with a diverse array of well-suited groundcover plants can make your garden stand out from the rest while helping the environment.

For those who are tired of spreading mulch every year, you can save tons of time and money by planting groundcovers in groupings, or swaths. With proper spacing, these plants will grow together in time, forming colonies of dense foliage that eliminate the need for mulch. It's best to plant swaths of single species at a time, for example, a swath of 9-12 Pink Muhly Grass behind a swath of 15-18 Wood Betony. This will help encourage the formation of a successful, dense swath.

Below, you'll find our growing list of groundcover grasses, evergreens, small shrubs and flowering perennials--happy browsing!!
