Shrubs are a crucial part of any landscape foundation, lending structure to the flowing textures of the perennials in the design. Our favorite shrubs to plant? Native ones, of course! Bountiful Gardens carries the largest selection of native shrubs in the area, and many of them are quite hard to find!

Native shrubs play a critical role in the lives of our native pollinators, with many of them offering rich nectar and pollen for our flighted friends. Many also produce either berries or seed clusters that fuel migratory birds along their journey. Did you know shrubs can be host plants too? For example, the adorable Spicebush Swallowtail relies on Spicebush for its entire lifecycle.

When it comes to placement, it's totally up to you! We typically recommend nestling shrubs into your layered perennial landscape, creating focal points that help define the space. Be sure to keep height and spread in mind when designing! As you might imagine, the tallest shrubs should generally go toward the back of the design so they don't block other features.
