Ornamental & Native Grasses

Capture Nature's Flow with Grasses

Grasses are the oft-overlooked unsung heroes of the landscape. With their strong yet delicate blades, they capture the breeze and allow you to see the flow of nature herself. Ornamental and Native grasses come in many different sizes, with some growing as small clumps and others reaching nearly 9 feet in height during their bloom period.

While grasses don't produce petaled flowers for pollinators, they do produce valuable pollen that gets collected by bees and other beneficial insects. At the same time, grasses generally don't rely on insect pollination, using wind-borne strategies instead. In addition, grasses provide crucial habitat for resting pollinators, small mammals and beneficial predatory insects like dragonflies.

Some grasses are known to be invasive, but Bountiful Gardens is proud to say we don't carry those! While Silvergrass (Miscanthus) is on our list, we make sure to only carry sterile, non-seeding varieties that pose no threat of spreading.

While the vast majority of grasses aren't evergreen, many of them, like Fountain Grass, Little Bluestem, Big Bluestem and Reed Grass can be left standing all Winter, as their dried flower stalks stay sturdy until Spring's showers hit. These stalks are also critical habitat for overwintering insects, giving you even more reason to leave them standing!

The textures that can be achieved with a careful grass landscape design are unmatched--from the airy, floaty seedheads of Northern Sea Oats to the fluffy pink plumes of Pink Muhly Grass, there's no limit to the magic you can plant. You can even replace your lawn with a mixture of low-growing perennial grasses for a natural backyard paradise!
