Japanese Forest Grass
Hakonechloa

The Golden Waterfall: Hakonechloa macra (Japanese Forest Grass)
The Snapshot
Common Name: Japanese Forest Grass, Hakone Grass
Scientific Name: Hakonechloa macra
Hardiness: Zones 5 – 9 (Bulletproof in NJ, provided it has shade).
The "Vibe": Ethereal, fluid, and high-end; the "Liquid Gold" of the shade garden.
Why It’s a Jersey "Shade Garden" Essential
The Movement: Unlike the stiff, vertical grasses like Calamagrostis, Hakonechloa has a unique "cascading" habit. It grows in a soft mound and flows in one direction, usually toward the light, like a slow-motion green waterfall.
The "Neon" in the Dark: Most varieties are variegated with bright gold or chartreuse. In the dark, shadowy corners of an NJ woodland garden, these plants look like they are plugged into an outlet—they literally glow.
Fall Fire: In October, the golden leaves often take on a stunning pink or reddish-orange flush before turning a tawny tan for the winter.
No "Thug" Behavior: This grass is a slow, polite grower. It will never take over your garden or seed itself into the lawn. It stays exactly where you put it, getting more beautiful every year.
Stories from the Garden
"I have a North-facing garden in Montclair that gets almost zero direct sun. I was tired of just planting Hostas, so I put in a row of 'Aureola' Hakonechloa along my slate path. It has changed the whole feel of the yard. It looks like silk blowing in the wind. Even on the muggiest NJ July days, it looks cool and refreshing. It’s expensive compared to other grasses, but it’s worth every penny for the 'wow' factor."

Designer Tips: Where to Plant
The "Spiller" of the Wall: Plant it at the top of a stone retaining wall. It will "spill" over the edge like a golden liquid, softening the hard lines of the stone.
The Hosta Companion: Pair it with blue-leaved Hostas (like 'Blue Angel' or 'Halcyon'). The contrast between the broad, blue-matte leaves and the fine, golden "silk" of the grass is a classic high-end design move.
The Container "Thrill/Spill": Use it in large, dark-colored pots on a shaded patio. It acts as both a "thriller" and a "spiller," looking elegant and modern.
Designer Pro-Tip: The "Morning Sun" Boost. While it loves shade, the golden color of 'Aureola' and 'All Gold' is actually brightest if it gets one or two hours of soft morning sun. If it’s in total dark shade, it will turn a more lime-green color.
