Junipers

Juniperus spp.

The Versatile Veterans: Juniperus spp.

The Snapshot

  • Common Name: Juniper, Red Cedar (for the native J. virginiana)

  • Scientific Name: Juniperus spp.

  • Hardiness: Zones 2 – 9 (Bulletproof in all of NJ).

  • The "Vibe": Rugged, textured, and structural; the "Backbone" of the garden.

The "Big Three" Forms (How to Choose for Your Yard)

Junipers are unique because they come in three distinct "architectural flavors." On your Wix site, it’s best to categorize them this way:

1. The Ground-Hugging Carpets (J. horizontalis)

These are the "living mulch." They grow 6 inches tall but can spread 8 feet wide.

  • Why we love them: They suppress weeds, stabilize slopes, and never need a lawnmower.

  • Top Varieties: 'Blue Rug' (silvery blue), 'Golden Carpet' (neon yellow).

2. The Modern Mounds (J. chinensis & J. squamata)

The "standard" landscape shrubs that provide year-round texture.

  • Why we love them: They provide a "hard" texture that contrasts beautifully with soft perennials.

  • Top Varieties: 'Blue Star' (a steel-blue "hedgehog"), 'Sea Green' (arching, mint-green branches).

3. The Vertical Sentinels (J. virginiana & J. scopulorum)

The "Exclamation Points" of the garden.

  • Why we love them: They provide privacy in tight spaces without the "fat" footprint of a Pine or Spruce.

  • Top Varieties: 'Skyrocket' (pencil-thin), 'Taylor' (the NJ native alternative to Italian Cypress).

Why They Are a New Jersey "Must-Have"

  • Salt & Sand Immunity: If you live on the Jersey Shore, Junipers are your best friend. They can handle direct salt spray and grow in pure sand without batting an eye.

  • Extreme Cold & Wind: In the Highlands, where winter winds can dessicate other evergreens, Junipers stay green and tough.

  • The "Gin" Scent: When you crush the needles or berries, you get that classic, refreshing botanical scent (which is exactly what flavors Gin).

  • Wildlife Winter Sanctuary: The dense, prickly foliage is the #1 place for Bluebirds and Cedar Waxwings to hide from storms and predators.

Stories from the Garden

"I have an extremely steep hill in my backyard in West Orange that was impossible to mow and constantly eroding. I planted a mass of 'Blue Rug' Junipers. Five years later, the entire hill is a beautiful carpet of silver-blue. I never have to water it, I never have to weed it, and it looks even better when it snows. It saved my backyard."

Designer Tips: Where to Plant

  • The "Italian Entry": Use two 'Taylor' Junipers to flank a front door. It creates a formal, high-end look that is much hardier than the Mediterranean plants they mimic.

  • The Rock Garden Anchor: Place a 'Blue Star' next to a large boulder and surround it with River Rock. It looks like a high-alpine landscape with zero effort.

  • The "Anti-Invasive" Screen: Use our native Eastern Red Cedar (J. virginiana) to create a bird-friendly privacy screen instead of using non-native Arborvitae.

Designer Pro-Tip: Avoid the "Wet Feet" Trap. Most Junipers in New Jersey die from over-watering or being planted in a low spot. If you have heavy clay, plant them on a "mound" or a "berm" so the water drains away from the trunk. If you can't decide if they need water, don't water them.
