What to Plant in July!

Does your garden glow in Spring, but start looking a bit tired in Summer? It can be tempting to fill your landscape with early blooming perennials, but for color and interest across the seasons, you have to make sure you have a well-rounded plant palette! In this video, we’re going to be going over some incredible plants you can get in the ground right now to enjoy gorgeous blooms during these harsh summer months.

These plants all feature the sprawling roots and hardy characteristics it takes to bloom in the heat of July and August, when many other perennials have already gone to seed. Keep watching to find out how to wake your sleepy Summerscape!

Summer wildflowers in the Asteracea family are some of the most impressive out there, and July is when they really start to pop. Some of our absolute favorites are native Coneflowers like Echinacea and Rudbeckia, also known as Black Eyed Susan.

These perennials thrive in Summer sun, blooming from late June all the way through October. They’re largely drought tolerant once established, and thanks to their fuzzy leaves, Deer tend to leave them alone!

If you want the best of both worlds in one coneflower, you can opt for Echibeckia, which is a sterile hybrid species boasting some bold colors and petal patterns.

With a maximum height of just 2 feet, Stokes Aster is another North American-native wildflower that will give you purple and blue blooms from late Spring all the way through early Fall.

For blue blooms at taller heights in full sun, Chaste Tree is a captivating choice. This Mediterranean-native is also in the mint family, meaning it’s highly deer resistant!

When it comes to Summer blooms, Panicle Hydrangeas are one of the most magnificent out there. Starting off white and changing over the months into deep pinks and reds, these flower clusters are truly something to behold.

And speaking of transformations, there’s nothing like Beautyberry, whose midsummer flowers develop into breathtaking purple berries come early Fall!

If you’re looking to make the ultimate Summer statement in full sun, you can’t do better than Crape Myrtles! These plants start bursting with flower clusters in midsummer, giving you a floral fireworks display you’ll look forward to year after year, and you can find a variety to fit any space!

If you’re looking more for texture in your landscape, we also have a huge variety of native and ornamental grasses that are sure to dazzle as they sway in a warm breeze.

Some of our favorite native grasses are little & big bluestem, Switchgrass, northern sea grass and Broomsedge, all of which stand up beautifully to harsh heat and blazing sun.

So don’t let your Summerscape look sleepy any longer–get out and plant these perennials today! In time, you can create a vibrant garden that blooms from March to frost.

And if you’re still hoping to get herbs and veggies in the ground, or plant up a second round of crops, it’s not too late! We have plenty of culinary plants that are ready to soak up the sun for late Summer and early Fall harvests.

Finally, it’s never too late to pot up a new container garden, or spruce up an existing one with some fresh new Summer annuals, and we’re always stocked with the best selection you’ll find.
