Begonias are back!!

Vibrant orange and red flowers in full bloom fill the foreground, with a background of lush greenery, creating a lively garden scene.

Begonias are an extremely popular indoor and outdoor plant. Begonias of all shapes and sizes typically make great indoor and outdoor plants. Some, however, are more suited for the indoor lifestyle.  They like bright, indirect light and water when the top layer of soil is dry.

We also have many new Fittonia aka (Nerve Plant) in beautiful colors. They’re very easy to grow and prefer bright, indirect light. Lower light can cause it to lose some of its vibrant color and growth will slow.

Fittonia loves water and to be consistently moist, but not soggy. Water thoroughly when the top 50% of soil is dry. If you let your Fittonia dry out too much, it will let you know with limp leaves. Not to worry! After a thorough watering, the leaves should soon perk up.

A vine by nature, Winter Jasmine also makes an excellent hanging basket. Known for its vigorous growth and ease of culture, all that’s needed is a sunny, cool window during fall and winter for optimum growth and bud set. This plant enhances the home with fragrance and reminds us that spring is just around the corner.

African Violets come in many colors

You can grow beautiful African violets!

They need plentiful light to bloom. It's easy–as a rule, give them full sun in winter, and bright light in summer. From October through April, you can grow them in a sunny east window. Then, from May through September, let the plants dwell in a north exposure or under fluorescents. (We have more 2.5" cute little ones blooming to give it a shot.)

Try to use only room-temperature (or slightly warmer) water. You can water from the top or the bottom; sometimes bottom watering is easier because of spreading leaves. To water from below, fill a saucer or bowl with one inch of water, and let the plant absorb all of the moisture it can for 30 minutes, then pour off any excess. Water frequently enough to keep the soil moist, but not soggy.

One easy way to water an African violet is to place the pot in a container with no more than an inch of water. And here’s another tip: grow the plants in clay pots! Clay absorbs moisture, and then releases it as humidity through evaporation.
