Also known as Lenten Rose, Hellebores are one of the first plants to bloom in the Spring, and you'll be excited to know Bountiful Gardens has a HUGE selection of Hellebore varieties at all three of our locations: Ewing, Hillsborough & Lawrenceville! The best part? They're blooming RIGHT NOW!

In this post, you'll learn:

  • Hellebores are one of the first perennials to bloom each year

  • They provide crucial pollen to early season pollinators

  • Hellebores thrive in the shade

  • Hellebores are deer-resistant!

When it comes to Spring blooms, there aren't too many that are both herbaceous and evergreen--that's where Hellebores come in! Unlike Spring ephemerals (daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, etc.), which burst with color then die back for the rest of the year, Hellebores will give you Spring blooms on top of gorgeous foliage that lasts throughout the year.

Do deer, rabbits or other critters tend to nibble around your yard? Hellebores won't be touched thanks to the pest-repelling compounds in their leaves. That's right! Hellebores are deer-resistant! At the same time, their blooms will provide essential early-season pollen and nectar for Spring bees and pollinators. It's a win-win!

Hellebores are some premium shade plants!

Hellebores thrive in shady conditions, which as many gardeners know can be hard to fill with blooming plants. They grow beautifully alongside ferns, lily turf, toad lilies, ligularia, astilbe and much more. Over time, they'll spread to cover more ground. This can be accelerated by planting in groups of three or more.

As far as water and soil, Hellebores like things on the moister, richer side. You'll want a moisture-retaining soil that is high in organic matter so the roots can stay hydrated and nourished for optimal growth. While they like moist soil, they DON'T like wet, soupy, swampy soils, so it's important to know the difference. If you need any help with soil or water recommendations, we're here to help!

In addition to being beautiful shade garden plants, Hellebores also make perfect focal points in Spring container gardens! Mix them with pansies, primrose, bidens and more for the perfect arrangement. Don't forget about the thrillers, fillers and spillers!
