Bougainvillea

The Paper Flower: Bougainvillea

Bougainvilleas are woody, thorny vines that crave two things: heat and intense sunlight. They are "high-performance" plants—if you give them enough light, they will reward you with a neon explosion of color. If they are unhappy, they aren't shy about dropping their leaves to let you know!

Suggested Placement in the Home

  • The "Sunroom" Superstar: This is not a low-light plant. It needs a South-facing window or a heated sunroom where it can soak up at least 6–8 hours of direct sun.

  • The Summer Balcony: It loves a "commuter" lifestyle. Keep it indoors for the winter, but move it to your sunniest outdoor spot once the nights stay consistently above 15°C.

  • High and Bright: Place it on a pedestal or a high plant stand. Its natural habit is to trail and climb, so giving it vertical space makes it look majestic.

Care & Maintenance

  • Pruning for Color: Bougainvilleas bloom on new growth. To keep the colors coming, prune the plant back after each flowering cycle. This encourages the plant to push out new stems, which will eventually carry the next round of colorful bracts.

  • The "Tough Love" Watering: They actually bloom better when they are slightly stressed. Wait for the leaves to start looking just a tiny bit wilted before giving the plant a deep, thorough drink.

  • Leaf (and Thorn) Awareness: Use gloves when handling! Not only are the thorns sharp, but the plant is sensitive to being moved. Try to avoid "helicopter parenting" and let it sit still.

  • Root Sensitivity: These plants have very fine, brittle root systems. When repotting, be extremely gentle—disturbing the root ball too much can cause the plant to go into shock and drop all its leaves.

The Essential Tip for Beginners

The "Pot-Bound" Secret: Bougainvilleas are a bit claustrophobic—but they like it! They actually bloom much more profusely when their roots are slightly pot-bound (tight in the pot). Don't rush to move your plant into a bigger container. A "snug" root system tells the plant to stop focusing on roots and start focusing on making those spectacular colorful bracts!
