Named for its large size, distinctive heart shape and ruby-red flesh, this hardy Japanese variety not only blooms and ripens earlier, but tends to bear larger crops than other plum trees; 'Elephant Heart' plum is also more disease resistant and vigorous than European plums. Its delicious fruit ripens and is ready to be harvested by early Fall. This type of plum is easily the sweetest, best for fresh eating or used in jams. Although this tree is not self-pollinated, it still serves as an ornamental specimen. In the Spring, its bare branches will be decorated with showy white blossoms before the foliage emerges.
