Our Native Rock Garden design features twelve carefully-selected species that thrive in dry, sunny, rocky conditions with well-draining soils. Our native Prickly Pear cactus is the groundcover star of the show, featuring brilliant yellow flowers in the hot summer months. Yarrow, Pale Purple Coneflower, Smooth Blue Aster and Prairie Coreopsis provide a mid-layer, and Prairie Dock, Broomsedge, Rattlesnake Master and Small-Head Blazing Star provide a well-layered and textured variety of taller heights.

Please note that the maturity and "fill-in" time of native plants are heavily dependent on your specific soil conditions and environment. While our herbaceous perennials are vigorous growers, please allow 2–3 seasons for your garden to reach the density and height shown in our designed packages
 
*Native plants are low-maintenance, but they aren't no-maintenance, especially during their first two years. Follow these steps to ensure they reach the mature, lush look of our designs.
 
Watering (The Most Critical Step)
New Transplants: Water immediately after planting to help soil settle around the roots.
The First Month: Water frequently—often daily for the first two weeks—until they begin to root and show new growth.
Year One & Two: Provide deep, infrequent watering (about 1 inch per week) when the top 2–3 inches of soil feel dry.
Pro Tip: Always check soil moisture with your finger; plants can wilt from both too little and too much water.

Mulching & Soil Support
Apply Mulch: Use 2–4 inches of organic mulch (like wood chips or leaf litter) to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
The "Donut" Rule: Keep mulch 3–4 inches away from the plant’s stem (the crown) to prevent rot and disease.
Skip the Fertilizer: Most natives are adapted to lean soils; excess fertilizer can lead to weak, "floppy" growth and more pests.

Managing Your Design Space
Patience with Spacing: Native perennials prioritize underground root growth in their first year. Avoid the urge to infill gaps too early, as this leads to overcrowding once they reach mature size. Try to stick to the design. 
Weeding: Keep the area clear of invasive plants during the first year so your natives don't have to compete for nutrients and light.
Seasonal Cleanup
Leave the Leaves: In the fall, leave dried seed heads and stalks. They provide food for birds and essential habitat for overwintering pollinators.
Spring Cutback: Wait until spring temperatures are consistently in the 50s before trimming dead stems to allow beneficial insects to emerge.
