Daffodil
Narcissus

The Golden Trumpet: Narcissus (Daffodils)
Snapshot
Common Name: Daffodil, Jonquil, Narcissus
Scientific Name: Narcissus spp.
Origin: Europe and North Africa (Naturalized perfectly in NJ)
Hardiness: Zones 3 – 8 (They laugh at a surprise Jersey frost)
"Vibe": Unstoppable cheer, resilient, and bold; the "Grand Opening" of the spring season.
Why the "Potted" Experience is Better
"No-Fail" Guarantee: When customers buy bulbs in the fall, they’re playing a guessing game. By buying from you in a pot, they see exactly what they’re getting—buds ready to pop or flowers already in their glory.
Instant Curb Appeal: They can drop these pots directly into decorative urns on their front porch to instantly wash away the "winter gray."
"Deer-Proof" Champion: In New Jersey, this is the Holy Grail. Daffodils contain a bitter alkaloid called lycorine. To a NJ deer or rabbit, a daffodil tastes like a bad decision. They won't touch them.
Multiplier: Unlike tulips (which often disappear after a year), daffodils are the "gift that keeps on giving." They naturalize and multiply over time, turning a small cluster into a massive golden drift.
Stories from the Garden
"I stopped by the nursery in early April because I was tired of looking at my dead brown mulch. I grabbed five pots of the 'Tête-à-Tête' miniatures. I popped them into my window boxes, and suddenly the whole house looked alive. Even after that weird April sleet we had last week, they stood right back up the next morning. It’s the easiest way to feel like winter is finally over."

Designer Tips: The "Pot to Plot" Transition
Since you sell them in pots, your customers need to know how to save them for next year:
Enjoy the Show: Keep the pot on the porch or in the garden while they bloom.
Deadhead: Once the flower dies, snip the flower head off so the plant doesn't waste energy making seeds.
The "Yellow" Rule: Do NOT cut the leaves. The leaves act like solar panels, charging the bulb for 2027. Wait until they turn completely yellow and floppy (usually June) before removing them.
Plant 'Em: Customers can slide the whole root ball out of the nursery pot and plant it directly into the ground once the flowers fade.
