'Chandler' Spring-bearing Strawberry

Fragaria × ananassa

'Chandler' Strawberry (Spring-Bearing)

'Chandler' is a June-bearing variety, meaning it produces one massive, concentrated crop over a period of about 3 to 4 weeks in late spring. It is famous for its "brilliant" finish—the berries have a glossy, almost polished look that makes them the most beautiful fruit on the patio.

Setting the Stage for Success

Soil & Fertilizer

'Chandler' is an "athletic" grower and needs consistent fuel to support its heavy fruit load.

  • The Soil: Use a high-quality potting mix with added compost. Ensure your pot has great drainage; strawberries love water but hate "damp feet" which can lead to crown rot.

  • Feeding: Use a balanced organic fertilizer as soon as you see new green growth in the spring. Once you see white blossoms, switch to a liquid high-potassium feed every 10–14 days to help the plant pump sugar into the berries.

The "Heat" Advantage

Unlike some northern-bred strawberries, 'Chandler' was developed in California. It handles the intense heat of a south-facing patio better than almost any other variety, making it a top choice for gardeners in warmer regions.

Maintenance, Trimming &

Troubleshooting

Managing the Canopy

  • The Harvest: 'Chandler' produces fruit that is large and heavy. If you are growing in a "Strawberry Jar" or hanging basket, ensure the berries aren't getting pinched against the rim of the pot as they grow.

  • Runners: Like the 'Allstar', 'Chandler' will try to send out runners. To keep the berries large and the harvest long, snip the runners off during the fruiting season.

Pest Prevention & Troubleshooting

  • Gray Mold (Botrytis): Because 'Chandler' is so juicy and the fruit can be dense, ensure they have good airflow. Water the base of the plant, not the leaves or the fruit.

  • The Bird Battle: Use bird netting. There is nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a perfectly glossy, ripe Chandler with a single beak-mark in it!

Flavor & Culinary Delight

The 'Chandler' is the "dessert" strawberry. Its texture is slightly softer than the 'Allstar', giving it a "melting" quality when you bite into it.

  • Fresh: Eat them sun-warm, straight from the vine. They are so sweet they rarely need added sugar.

  • Dipping: Because of their beautiful wedge shape and glossy skin, they are the #1 choice for chocolate-covered strawberries.

  • Slicing: Perfect for topping cereal, waffles, or a classic Pavlova.

Pro-Tip: The "Pine Straw" Trick

If you can find pine needles (pine straw), use them as mulch for your 'Chandler' pots. Not only does it keep the berries off the dirt, but as the needles break down, they slightly acidify the soil—exactly the environment 'Chandler' needs to stay vibrant and productive!
