Purple Fountain Grass

Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'

The Garden Grace: Purple Fountain Grass

This plant is famous for its long, arching, burgundy-purple blades that sway in the slightest breeze. In mid-summer, it produces soft, feathery "bottlebrush" plumes that emerge a deep maroon and fade to a soft tan. It brings a "whispering" sound and a sense of life to the garden that stationary flowers simply can't match.

Role in the Garden

  • Design Category: Thriller. It typically grows 3–5 feet tall and wide in a perfect, symmetrical "fountain" shape.

  • Best Placement: It is the "go-to" center-piece for large patio urns, poolside planters, and dynamic flower borders. It creates a "veil" of color that other plants can peek through.

  • Bloom Season: July through the first hard frost. The plumes are "everlasting" on the plant and look stunning even as they dry in late autumn.

Care & Maintenance

  • The "Sun-Drenched" Secret: To maintain that rich, wine-red color, it must be in full sun. In the shade, the leaves will turn a dull, muddy green and the plant will lose its "fountain" arch.

  • Drought Resilience: Once established, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant. It is a favorite for "Xeriscaping" or low-water landscapes.

  • The "Annual" Reality: Unlike many other ornamental grasses, the 'Rubrum' variety is not hardy in cold climates (it’s a perennial only in Zones 9-11). It is grown as an annual in most of the world.

  • No Mess: It is a sterile hybrid, meaning it won't drop seeds all over your garden and become a weed next year.

The Essential Tip for Beginners

The "Touch Test": Don't be afraid to run your hands through the plumes! Purple Fountain Grass is a "sensory" plant. If the plumes start to look "shaggy" or dirty after a heavy rain, you can actually "comb" them with your fingers to fluff them back up. It’s the perfect plant for high-traffic areas where people naturally want to reach out and touch the garden.
