Sweet Alyssum

Lobularia maritima

The Fragrant Cloud: Sweet Alyssum

Alyssum is famous for its tiny, four-petaled flowers that grow in dense, rounded clusters. While white is the classic "snow" variety, modern breeding has given us stunning shades of royal purple, lavender, and rosy pink. Its scent is its most famous trait—a warm, sweet honey fragrance that is strongest on calm, sunny days.

Role in the Garden

  • Design Category: Spiller or Filler. It stays low (4–8 inches tall) but spreads wide. It is the perfect Spiller for softening the rim of a pot or a Filler for tucking into the "gaps" between larger plants.

  • Best Placement: It belongs in hanging baskets, window boxes, and pathway edgings. Because it stays low, it’s also the "gold standard" for rock gardens.

  • Bloom Season: Early Spring through Fall. It loves the cool weather of spring and fall, but modern varieties (like the 'Snow Princess' series) can now power through the summer heat without "melting."

Care & Maintenance

  • The "Living Mulch": Because it grows so densely, it acts as a groundcover that keeps the soil cool and moist for its neighbors—making it a great "roommate" for taller, thirstier plants.

  • The "Mid-Season Shave": If your Alyssum starts to look "seedy" or thin in the center during a July heatwave, give it a "haircut." Snip off the top 1/3 of the plant with garden shears. Within 10 days, it will flush out with a brand-new carpet of fresh, fragrant flowers.

  • Self-Cleaning: Most modern varieties are self-cleaning, but they are also prolific self-sowers. If you plant white Alyssum once, you’ll likely see tiny "volunteers" popping up in your garden beds for years to come.

  • Beneficial Magnet: It is a powerhouse for biological pest control. The tiny flowers attract Hoverflies and Parasitic Wasps, which eat aphids and other garden "bad guys."

The Essential Tip for Beginners

The "Nose Height" Rule: Don't plant Alyssum in the ground at the back of a deep bed—you'll never smell it! To truly enjoy the honey scent, plant it in hanging baskets near your door or in window boxes where the breeze can carry the fragrance inside. It’s a sensory plant; keep it where you can reach it!
