Lantana

The Heat-Loving Hustler: Lantana
Lantana is a sensory powerhouse. Its leaves have a rough, sandpaper-like texture and a distinct, pungent "citrus-meets-sage" aroma when crushed. But it’s the flowers that steal the show: tiny tubular blossoms arranged in dense circular heads that change color as they age, often shifting from yellow to orange to red on the same plant.
Role in the Garden
Design Category: Filler or Spiller. Mounded varieties (like the 'Lucky' series) are perfect Fillers. Trailing varieties (like 'New Gold' or 'Purple Trailing') are elite Spillers.
Best Placement: They are the kings of sunny mailboxes, hot poolside containers, and sloped banks where they can spread out.
Bloom Season: Late Spring through the first hard frost. They are "heat-activated"—the hotter it gets, the more they bloom.
Care & Maintenance
The "Berries" Warning: Standard Lantanas produce small green berries that turn metallic black. These are toxic if eaten, and they tell the plant to stop blooming and start making seeds. Look for "Sterile" varieties (like the 'Luscious' or 'Bloomify' series) which don't make berries and therefore bloom much more heavily.
Drought Resilience: Once established, Lantana is incredibly drought-tolerant. It is a "water-wise" favorite.
Deer & Rabbit Resistant: Most critters hate the rough texture and the strong scent of the leaves, making it one of the "safest" plants for open gardens.
The Ultimate Butterfly Magnet: If you want a Butterfly Garden, this is your #1 plant. It is a high-nectar source for Monarchs, Swallowtails, and even Hummingbirds.
The Essential Tip for Beginners
The "Mid-Season Reset": If your Lantana starts to look "woody" or stops blooming in late July, don't be afraid to give it a "hard prune." Cut the whole plant back by about one-third. Give it a shot of balanced liquid fertilizer and a deep drink. Within two weeks, it will flush out with fresh green growth and a massive new wave of flowers for the autumn!
