'Icicles'

Helichrysum

The Frosted Spear: Helichrysum 'Icicles'

'Icicles' is a distinct departure from the rounded, fuzzy leaves of the standard Helichrysum petiolare. It grows in a dense, upright mound of thin, silver-grey leaves that feel like soft felt. Its metallic sheen is actually a layer of tiny white hairs— a natural adaptation that helps the plant reflect intense sunlight and conserve moisture.

Role in the Garden

  • Design Category: Thriller or Filler. Because of its upright, spiky habit (reaching 10–15 inches), it works as a small Thriller in medium pots or a sophisticated Filler that adds vertical "shreds" of silver.

  • Best Placement: It is a "must-have" for modern minimalist containers, white/moon gardens, and mixed window boxes. It excels in spots with reflected heat, like next to a pool or on a stone patio.

  • Bloom Season: Foliage-focused (All Season). While it may occasionally produce tiny, inconspicuous cream flowers, they are rarely seen and are usually snipped off to keep the foliage dense.

Care & Maintenance

  • The "Silver Screen" Rule: Like most silver-leaved plants, 'Icicles' needs Full Sun. In the shade, it will lose its metallic luster, turn a dull greenish-grey, and start to "stretch" or flop over.

  • Drought Warrior: This plant is exceptionally drought-tolerant. It actually prefers to be slightly underwatered rather than overwatered. If the soil stays soggy, the silver stems will turn black and rot.

  • No-Fuss Grooming: It requires almost no maintenance. If it gets too wide or "messy" for your container, you can simply snip the stems back to your desired shape; it handles pruning like a champ.

  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant: Most critters find the fuzzy, licorice-scented leaves unpalatable.

The Essential Tip for Beginners

The "Bottom Leaf" Check: If your 'Icicles' starts to lose its leaves at the very base of the stem, don't panic! This is usually a sign of too much water or not enough airflow. Make sure your pot has plenty of drainage holes and isn't "smothered" by other plants. A little breathing room at the base will keep the whole plant silver and healthy all summer.
