Treasure Flower
Gazania

The Sun-Worshipper: Gazania (Gazania rigens)
Gazanias are the "daylight specialists" of the garden. They have a fascinating quirk: their flowers are phototropic, meaning they only open when the sun is shining directly on them. On cloudy days or at night, they tuck their petals away into tight, elegant buds. Their foliage is equally tough, often featuring a leathery green top and a shimmering silver underside to reflect heat.
Role in the Garden
Design Category: Filler or Spiller. They grow in a low, mounded habit (6–12 inches tall), making them a perfect Filler for the front of a bed or a ground-hugging Spiller for containers.
Best Placement: They are champions for rock gardens, driveway borders, and low-maintenance patio pots. They love reflected heat from stone, brick, or pavement.
Bloom Season: Late Spring through Fall. They are incredibly prolific, often blooming right through the hottest weeks of August when other plants are struggling.
Care & Maintenance
The "Zero Thirst" Plant: Gazanias are exceptionally drought-tolerant. In fact, more Gazanias die from "kindness" (overwatering) than from neglect. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
Deadheading for Density: While they don't require it to survive, snipping off the faded flower stalks at the base will encourage the plant to produce a fresh round of "treasures."
Salt Tolerance: If you live near the coast, Gazania is one of the few annuals that can handle salt spray and sandy soil without skipping a beat.
Pollinator Appeal: Their wide, flat flower faces are a prime landing pad for bees and butterflies, who love basking in the sun on the warm petals.
The Essential Tip for Beginners
The "Cloudy Day" Warning: Don't panic if you buy a beautiful Gazania at the nursery, bring it home, and the flowers "disappear" the next morning. If the sky is overcast or it's early in the day, the plant is simply protecting its pollen. As soon as the sun breaks through the clouds, those "treasures" will unfurl in all their glory!
