'Blue My Mind'

Evolvulus

The Electric Blue: Evolvulus 'Blue My Mind'

'Blue My Mind' is a low-growing, mounded sub-shrub with stunning silvery-green, fuzzy foliage. The leaves act as the perfect neutral backdrop for the hundreds of nickel-sized, funnel-shaped flowers that cover the plant. Unlike traditional Morning Glories, this isn't a vine; it’s a tidy, well-behaved mound of pure color.

Role in the Garden

  • Design Category: Filler or Spiller. It starts as a dense Filler but eventually begins to trail elegantly over the edges of a pot, making it a "lazy" Spiller.

  • Best Placement: It is the "holy grail" for hanging baskets, window boxes, and sunny rock gardens. Because it loves reflected heat, it’s perfect for pots sitting on concrete or stone patios.

  • Bloom Season: Late Spring through Fall. It is a "sun-worshipper." The hotter and sunnier it gets, the more blue flowers it will produce.

Care & Maintenance

  • The "Sun-Only" Rule: This plant will not perform in the shade. If it doesn't get 6+ hours of direct sun, the flowers will stay closed and the silver foliage will turn a dull green.

  • No Deadheading (Self-Cleaning): The old flowers simply shrivel and disappear. You never have to spend time pinching or pruning to keep it looking tidy.

  • Drought Resilience: Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant. In fact, overwatering is the quickest way to kill it. Let the soil dry out significantly between waterings.

  • Pollinator Appeal: The bright blue stars are a favorite for native bees and small butterflies who are naturally attracted to the blue spectrum.

The Essential Tip for Beginners

The "Morning Perk-Up": If you wake up and your Evolvulus looks a bit "flat" or closed, don't worry—it’s just sleeping! The flowers typically open as soon as the sun hits them. If the leaves look silver and fuzzy, the plant is happy. If the leaves start to droop or turn dark green, it’s a sign you are likely overwatering. Step away from the watering can and let it bask in the sun!
