Mums
Chrysanthemum
The Autumn Anchor: Chrysanthemum
Mums are "photoperiodic" plants, meaning they use a sophisticated internal clock to track the length of the days. They only begin to form flower buds when the nights start to get longer and the air gets crisp. This makes them the perfect replacement for summer annuals that begin to fade in September.
Role in the Garden
Design Category: Filler. Due to their dense, mounded habit, they act as the perfect "plug-in" to fill gaps left by summer flowers.
Best Placement: They are the kings of the front porch, doorway displays, and flower bed borders. They look most impactful when grouped in odd numbers (3s or 5s) to create a "wave" of color.
Bloom Season: Fall. Depending on the variety (Early, Mid, or Late), they provide color from late August through the first hard freeze in November.
Care & Maintenance
The "Bottoms Up" Watering: Mums are very prone to foliar diseases if their leaves stay wet. Always water at the base of the plant. If you bought a "mound" from a garden center, the foliage is so thick that rain often can't reach the soil—check the moisture levels daily!
Deadheading for Longevity: While it takes some time, pinching off faded blooms will keep the mound looking fresh and encourage any remaining buds to open.
The "Pinch" Secret: If you buy a Mum in the spring, you must "pinch" (cut back) the stems by half every few weeks until July 4th. This prevents it from blooming too early and ensures it stays a tight, round mound for the fall.
Pollinator Lifeline: Mums are a vital late-season food source for late-emerging butterflies and honeybees preparing for winter.
The Essential Tip for Beginners
The "Garden" vs. "Florist" Mum: Not all Mums are created equal! Florist Mums (sold in grocery stores) are meant for indoors and have little cold tolerance. Garden Mums (sold in nurseries) are much hardier. If you want a chance at your Mum coming back next year, plant a "Garden Mum" in the ground at least 6 weeks before the first hard freeze so it can establish roots!
