Bidens

The Golden Sunburst: Bidens (Bidens ferulifolia)
Bidens is a member of the Aster family (like daisies and sunflowers), and you can see that in its charming, open-faced flowers. It is incredibly heat-tolerant and drought-resistant once established. Its feathery, fern-like foliage stays deep green all season, providing a beautiful backdrop for its bright, starry blossoms.
Role in the Garden
Design Category: Filler or Spiller. Depending on the variety, Bidens can grow as a tidy, mounded "Filler" or trail beautifully as a "Spiller."
Best Placement: It is a champion in hanging baskets and mixed containers, but it also makes a fantastic groundcover or front-of-the-border plant in flower beds.
Bloom Season: Spring, Summer, and Fall. It is one of the few annuals that will keep blooming right through the hottest days of summer and continue until the first hard frost.
Care & Maintenance
Self-Cleaning Star: Like Bacopa, Bidens is self-cleaning. You don't need to deadhead (remove old flowers) to keep the blooms coming; the plant just keeps on pushing out new buds.
Drought Tolerance: While it likes regular water, it is much more forgiving of a skipped watering than many other annuals. If it wilts, it usually bounces back remarkably fast.
Pollinator Magnet: Bidens is a powerhouse for wildlife! Its open, flat flowers make it incredibly easy for honeybees, native bees, and butterflies to land and feast on nectar.
The Essential Tip for Beginners
The "Mid-Season Haircut": While Bidens is self-cleaning, it can sometimes get a little "rangy" or long toward the end of August. Don't be afraid to give it a light trim (taking off about 2–3 inches of growth). This might feel scary, but it will stimulate the plant to branch out and produce a massive final flush of flowers that will last well into the autumn!
