  • The Ripeness Test: These don't soften like peaches. Instead, watch the skin color. It will shift from a dull green to a warm bronze or golden yellow. The best way to tell? The Smell Test. A ripe Asian pear will have a distinct, sweet, floral aroma. Taste one! If it's sweet and crunchy, harvest the rest.

Thinning is Essential

Asian pears are "over-achievers." They often grow more fruit than the branches can physically hold.

  • The Rule of One: In early summer, when the pears are about the size of a marble, thin the clusters so there is only one pear per cluster. This ensures the fruit grows to a large, juicy size and prevents the branches from snapping under the weight.

  • Fire Blight: This is a bacterial disease that makes branches look blackened or "scorched." If you see this, prune the affected branch 6 inches below the damage and dip your pruners in rubbing alcohol between every single cut to prevent spreading it.

  • Codling Moth: Just like apples, Asian pears can attract "worms." Using pheromone traps or organic fruit bags early in the season is the best defense.
