The Unfading Star: Globe Amaranth

Globe Amaranth is a "texture specialist." While other flowers wilt or drop petals, these "buttons" remain perfectly intact for weeks. They are a staple of the dried flower industry because they hold their intense color (purples, pinks, oranges, and whites) for years after being cut.

Role in the Garden

• Design Category: Filler. It grows in a stiff, upright, and bushy mound (12–24 inches tall), providing a solid mid-layer of color.

• Best Placement: It is a must-have for cutting gardens, low-maintenance borders, and pollinator gardens. Because of its "stiff" stems, it never needs staking.

• Bloom Season: Early Summer through Fall. It is a heat-thriver. The hotter it gets, the more "buttons" it pumps out.

Care & Maintenance

• The "Drought Warrior" Status: Once established, Gomphrena is incredibly drought-tolerant. It’s perfect for those "neglected" corners of the garden that don't get regular water.

• No Real Deadheading: Because the flowers last so long, you rarely need to "clean" the plant. However, cutting stems for indoor bouquets will encourage the plant to branch out even more.

• Pest and Disease Resistant: Deer and rabbits usually walk right past it (likely because the flowers are so scratchy!), and it is rarely bothered by mold or mildew.

• Pollinator Magnet: The tiny true flowers (which peek out from between the colorful scales) are a favorite for Butterflies—especially Skippers and Hairstreaks.

The Essential Tip for Beginners

The "Everlasting" Trick: To dry these for winter decor, cut the stems when the flower head is at its peak color but before it starts to turn "brown" at the base. Tie them in a bunch and hang them upside down in a dark, dry spot. In two weeks, you’ll have flowers that will look fresh in a vase for the next two years!
