Fuchsia

The Exotic Pendant: Fuchsia
Fuchsias are unique because of their "pendulous" habit—their flowers hang downward from the stems, making them most effective when planted at eye level or above. They come in stunning, high-contrast bicolors: royal purple with hot pink, snowy white with cherry red, and even soft corals and oranges.
Role in the Garden
Design Category: Spiller or Thriller. Trailing varieties are the world's most popular Spiller for baskets. Upright, "tree-form" Fuchsias act as a magnificent Thriller.
Best Placement: They are the undisputed queens of hanging baskets under a covered porch, north-facing window boxes, and shady patio corners.
Bloom Season: Late Spring through Fall. They bloom continuously, though they may take a "siesta" (stop blooming) during the hottest weeks of July if the nights don't cool down.
Care & Maintenance
The "Cool and Moist" Rule: Fuchsias are the opposite of most summer annuals; they hate extreme heat. They prefer temperatures between 15°C and 24°C. If it gets hotter than 30°C, they may wilt even if the soil is wet.
Deadheading for Density: To keep the "dancers" coming, pluck off the faded flowers along with the small green seed pod at the base. If you leave the pods, the plant thinks it's done and stops flowering.
Heavy Feeders: Because they produce so many complex blooms, they are very "hungry." Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 7–10 days.
Hummingbird Magnet: Fuchsias are perhaps the #1 plant for attracting Hummingbirds. The birds love the tubular shape and bright colors of the hanging blossoms.
The Essential Tip for Beginners
The "Mist" Trick: If you are having a particularly hot week (above 30°C), your Fuchsia might look sad and wilted even if the soil is damp. Don't add more water to the soil! Instead, use a spray bottle to mist the foliage with cool water in the evening. This lowers the temperature around the plant and helps it "breathe" through the heatwave.
