Planting Rhododendrons, Azaleas & Andromeda - Flowering Shrubs that LOVE the Shade!

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this video, you'll be hearing from Joe, Dan and Amelia about three phenomenal flowering shrubs that thrive in the shade: Rhododendrons, Azaleas & Andromeda. These are some garden classics with plenty to offer, and they're all right here at the nursery! Rhododendrons are prehistoric shrubs whose fossilized pollen has been dated back sixty million years. They burst into bloom in mid-Spring and provide a spectrum of colors in big, bountiful flower clusters. You can find them in red, pink, white, yellow purple and more. Even better, most Rhododendrons are evergreen, so they'll even provide greenery through the winter. Azaleas are also in the Rhododendron genus, and there are over a thousand varieties of them. There are 26 species of Azalea that are native to North America, with New Jersey's native being the Pinxterbloom Azalea. Azaleas are generally deciduous and tend to bloom a bit earlier than their "true" Rhododendron counterparts. Andromeda are beautiful, deer-resistant shrubs that love the shade. Also known as Lily of the Valley shrub, Andromeda has recognizable drooping flowers with a light, sweet fragrance. Leaves are normally a deep glossy green, with new growth coming out with a deep red color. Planting Crabapple, Lilac and Flowering Dogwood for STUNNING Spring Blooms & Fall Hues!

Planting Crabapple, Lilac and Flowering Dogwood for STUNNING Spring Blooms & Fall Hues!

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this week's floral report, we're covering three more amazing woody plants that bring vibrance and life to the Spring landscape: Crabapples, Lilacs & Flowering Dogwood. These are must-haves in any well-thought-out garden. Crabapples have been cultivated for between 4-10,000 years! They're also the ancestor of our common apples, which were bred over countless generations. These trees flowers profusely in mid-spring in shades of white, pink and red. Many cultivars will start their bloom more pink and fade to a white as the blossoms fully open. Crabapples themselves are tart but edible, best used sweetened up in preserves and jellies. Crabapples love full sun and moist, well-draining soil, but can handle a bit of shade, and when Fall rolls around, you can expect some beautiful foliage. Lilacs are the favorite flower of too many people to count! Beloved for their color, beauty and most of all, their signature fragrance, these shrubs and trees bring a calming scent to the landscape in Spring. There are varieties that bloom from early to late Spring, so you can even mix and match for an extended bloom time! Lilacs love moist, well-draining soil in full sun to part shade, and can handle light droughts in a pinch. These are long-lived shrubs--you can expect them to live over 100 years, making them a perfect heritage plant for future generations. They're a fantastic present for Mother's Day! Last up is our native Flowering Dogwood! These small shade-loving trees thrive in moist, well-draining soils and can handle light droughts similarly to Lilac. They prefer to grow in shadier conditions, such as under the canopy of a larger shade tree. The flowers will make use of early Spring light, before the taller trees leaf out, and then the Summer shade will protect Dogwood leaves from direct sun exposure and burning. That said, there are varieties of Flowering Dogwood that perform well in full sun, too. After they bloom, red fruits are produced, which serve as critical nourishment for our native wildlife. Flowering Dogwoods are New Jersey's Memorial Tree, meaning they are often planted to commemorate members of the armed forces. Here are timestamps for you! Planting Flowering Cherries, Magnolias & Redbuds for a Spring Floral Festival in Your Landscape!

Planting Flowering Cherries, Magnolias & Redbuds for a Spring Floral Festival in Your Landscape!

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! The festival of flowers is rolling on, and flowering trees are blooming up a storm right now! This week, we'll be focusing on three types of classic flowering trees that can bring color, texture and even fragrance to your landscape: Flowering Cherries, Magnolias & Eastern Redbud. Flowering cherries come in countless varieties, with some of the most popular being Yoshino & Okame (early spring-blooming) and Kanzan (Kwanzan) & Flagpole (mid spring-blooming. The larger species max out around 40 feet, while smaller ones like Kanzan only grow to 15-20 feet tall and wide. These trees typically thrive in moist, well draining soils and can be planted both in groups or as specimen trees. The blooms range from white to light pink to nearly red, depending on the variety you choose. Magnolias are beautiful, ancient trees and shrubs that evolved on earth before bees existed! Many of them, like Southern Magnolia and Sweetbay Magnolia (both native!) have a gorgeous fragrance when blooming. Most Magnolia petals are also edible, and make a great addition to a coleslaw recipe. Their growth requirements are very similar to those of cherries--full sun to part shade, with moist, well-draining soil. Eastern Redbud is an incredible native plant in the Pea family featuring super-unique blooms that can pop right out of the trunk! These plants help fix nitrogen in the soil, promoting the growth of surrounding plants. The flowers are also edible, and have a soft crunch with a slight sweetness if you pick them at just the right time. These flowers are crucial for early season pollinators like bees, who wake up super hungry after their Winter slumber. Here are timestamps for you! Plant Spring Ephemerals for the Earliest Blooms of the Year! - What You Should be Planting NOW

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this video, we're doing something special: taking a look at blooms out in the wild! Specifically, we're diving into some of our favorite Spring Ephemerals! But what's an Ephemeral? Like their name suggests, Spring Ephemerals are plants that come up in early Spring, while the trees are still bare and the forest floor gets more light and warmth. They have a spectacular bloom, and then they vanish until the following year. Despite their short appearance, their importance to early pollinators and insects is undeniable--they're some of the only food sources for those flower-friends. By planting Spring Ephemerals, you can have blooms in your garden as early as March! Some of the most classic examples of ephemerals are daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and crocus, but there are so many NATIVE ephemerals to choose from that can benefit local wildlife. Ike will introduce you to Dutchman's Breeches, Trillium, Trout Lily, Virginia Bluebells and Bloodroot--five of the finest native Spring Ephemerals you can add to your rich-soiled garden. And for those celebrating this Sunday, Happy Easter!! At our Lawrenceville location, you can find an incredible assortment of custom-planted Easter baskets full of Spring annuals and bulbs, as well as a whole forest of Easter Lilies to wander through--you have to smell it to believe it! And of course, our floral experts are always ready to craft up a fresh arrangement for you! Help the Earth by Planting NATIVE! - Pollinator Day 2025 at Bountiful Gardens, Hillsborough, NJ

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! Some of our favorite blooms of the year are starting to pop NOW! To celebrate, we hosted another Pollinator Day event at our Hillsborough location alongside the Native Plant Society of New Jersey. After an introduction from Bountiful Gardens founder, Lisa Miccolis, Distinguished Professor Emeritus Steven N. Handel, PhD kicked off the event with a talk stressing the importance of pollinators and how we can protect and support them by planting more native species in our landscapes. Next, Nancy Toro, Somerset County Chapter Leader of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey led the group through some of the best and most important native trees in our ecosystem. Following Nancy was our very own Landscape Designer, Dan Ilkow, MLA, who discussed strategies for removing turf grass and replacing lawns with native meadow spaces. He and Lisa then led the group around our ever-expanding native plant section to get up-close and personal with some favorite specimens. Finally, Lisa and Dan shared some of their best landscape design tips, stressing the importance of starting small and expanding outward. It was a fantastic event, and we're excited to host more workshops and gatherings this year! Keep an eye on our new and improved website for more!
